Funding opportunities

We have several funding mechanisms available to network members. This includes:

Flexible funds

These funds are to encourage and support inter-disciplinary research collaborations between individuals across the UK within the remit of the GIBA Network+. These funds will help pump-prime collaborative research projects that could lead to:

  • Deeper mechanistic understanding of GIBA across the life-course and its modulation by lifestyle and other factors

  • Integration of novel GIBA-aligned technologies, techniques and disciplines

  • A longer term relationship between collaborators

  • A larger funding application

Our first call is now open and will close on 22nd November 2025 (at 5 pm UK time). Proposals will be supported that align with key GIBA-relevant questions being addressed by the network working groups. All network members are eligible to apply. Successful applicants are expected to be notified by December 2025. The maximum award available is £50,000.

Closing date: Saturday 22nd November, 5pm

Mobility awards

Funds are available to encourage and support mobility between academic institutions and also with industry partners. The awards aim to promote the movement of researchers and technicians between different research settings to facilitate knowledge transfer between academics. Beneficiaries of the mobility awards can be at any career stage. The mobility award funds may be used to:

  • Initiate a new collaboration

  • Strengthen an existing collaboration

  • Learn a new technique

  • Make use of existing resources outside the host institute

  • Facilitate the integration of different GIBA-relevant techniques

  • Lead to a funding application

  • Explore new technology transfer projects

Mobility awards may be between £500 for short-term visits to facilitate in-person collaborative activities, and up to £5,000 for longer-term and/or bilateral visits. Maximum duration is 3 months.

This is a rolling call where applications will be reviewed bimonthly by the network leadership team. Successful applicants will be notified within a week of the review meeting.

Fellowships

The Network+ will support two early career fellowships via the GIBA Network+ Fellowship Scheme. For each fellowship, up to £500,000 is available, finishing within the Network+ lifespan (2029). Applicants will need to demonstrate an interdisciplinary and ambitious approach, which will advance the understanding of GIBA-associated mechanisms across the life-course. Applicants should have appropriate and relevant research or innovation experience, judged against career stage.

To promote interdisciplinary research, we will also welcome applicants with experience in the mathematical/physical/social sciences. There will be no specified limit on the number of years postdoctoral or work experience, however priority will be given to researchers who demonstrate an upward trajectory towards independence. Awardees will be expected to contribute to at least one of the GIBA Network working groups.
